Cyber-ShARE is the Center of Excellence for Sharing resources for the Advancement of Research and Education through Cyberinfrastructure at the University of Texas at El Paso. In this project, we use cyberinfrastructure (CI) as defined by the National Science Foundation Cyberinfrastructure Council:

the infrastructure that integrates “hardware for computing, data and networks, digitally-enabled sensors, observatories and experimental facilities, and an interoperable suite of software and middleware services and tools.”

The Center concentrates specifically on the aspects of CI that deal with software and middleware services and tools, with the focus on the development of scientific CI applications and on training the next generation of scientists who can effectively use CI to perform leading-edge science.

The Cyber-ShARE Center brings together experts in computer science, computational mathematics, education, earth science, and environmental science who addresses the challenge of providing information to scientists and other CI users that will enable them to make informed decisions about retrieved resources and to have confidence in using results from CI-based applications. The Cyber-ShARE team conducts innovative research to facilitate the development of CI-based applications and increase their use by scientists by enhancing CI results with provenance information, trust recommendations, and uncertainty levels (areas that are recognized as essential for the success of CI), by creating scientist-centered tools and artifacts, and by contributing CI resources to appropriate CI portals. In addition, the following synergistic and multi-disciplinary subprojects will advance knowledge in:

  • provenance to capture knowledge about uncertainty and trust using results from discipline experts;
  • the physical properties of the Earth by studying CI-based techniques and approaches for integrating data with varying accuracy and sensitivity;
  • optimization of data streams and sensor arrays in ecological and environmental networks by targeting improved characterization of environmental phenomenon and processes.

Many of the Center researchers have been involved in national CI efforts, e.g., CEON, GEON, EarthScope, and they will work with an educator who has expertise in technology and science education to create unique and effective CI-based teaching components.

Goals

The Cyber-ShARE Center has four goals:

  1. develop an approach based on provenance, trust and uncertainty computation that inspires confidence in results obtained with CI;
  2. create a CI-enabled synergistic environment to support advances in earth and environmental science;
  3. train and educate a new generation of computer and interdisciplinary scientists who can effectively use CI-based software services and middleware and tools to advance science, mathematics, and technology; and
  4. contribute CI resources to appropriate portals in the discipline areas that are supported by the Center.
